About

Space Department is a creative hub and an Artists-in-Residence dedicated to supporting both local and international artists, architects or people in the creative industry. This is a place where people can stay, collaborate, research, test, make and exhibit ideas while being inspired by the historic town of Nara, Japan >

Workshops and Class

We encourage and invite any local and international artists to share and teach their knowledge, techniques and discuss ideas in their respective fields. Please check our regular classes or if you would like to teach please a regular weekly class please contact us >

Space Department are looking for artists, architects and designers interested in interprofessional collaboration to create new and exciting work for the local community. Please come and see us for any ideas that encourages spatial experience, installations and community interaction >

Co-Working Space

Our ground floor is a co-working space for anyone who would like to work outside of home. We can accommodate various groups and collaborative work. We also have a small wood workshop with basic tools available for people who are competent to use them. Any testing of work can also be accommodated within our open space. We are Open for local workshops and exhibitions!!

However, due to the current pandemic, we cannot accept any overseas artists for our Artists-in-Residence program. Please contact us to discuss a possible participation in the future.

Events and Exhibition

As part of artists-in-residency program, all research and work will be exhibited in the house for the public and community. Also there will public discussion or and dinner to discuss ideas. Space Department also encourages other artists to use the space to create events exhibition and discussion of ideas. Look out for announcements for theses events >

Gallery and Art Sale

We are an independant private initiative supporting local and international artists. We will have arts for sale to support our artists and our residency. Please watch this page soon>

Artist -In -Residence

The upper level of this residence is dedicated for Artist-in-Residence accommodation. We will accept artists, architects and designers interested in researching and translating Japanese philosophy and sensibility within their work. We can support artists through, discussion, connection and network with local artists. Please check all costs for the stay and accommodation in the application & Price >
